How Smell Healed My Broken Heart

As you may know, I lost my 12-year-old son, Max, in a car accident seven years ago.

In the aftermath of the accident, I relied on several essential oils to help me process the trauma, heartbreak, and grief.

I often share that I believe that necessity is the mother of invention.

What I have not yet shared are some of the deepest, darkest moments that forced me to experiment with everything—essential oils, talk therapy, and yoga, to name a few—in the hopes of finding a modality that helped me ease the intense pain of loss.

The most vivid and intense moment of this pain hit that first evening after I learned that Max had died. Well-intentioned friends dropped off pharmaceutical drug prescriptions, CBD oil, and flower essences that they all insisted I take for sleep. It must have worked, as I did drift off to sleep.

But not for long.

Around 1 a.m., I was jolted awake by the deepest, most intense physical pain I’d ever experienced radiating through my chest. Similar to a charley horse, but over the heart. I had never felt pain like that before. I literally felt like I was splitting in two.

I knew that with a charley horse, it helps to stand up. This allows the muscle to release its involuntary spasm by stretching the cramped muscle and lengthening its fibers, which interrupts the tightening signal and forces it to relax.

I suspected there must be some similar action I could take to relax the muscles of my heart. 

I recalled that Rose Essential oil could help with grief. I kept some in Max’s room, so I crawled into his now vacant bed, tears streaming down my face, reached for the bottle, and inhaled deeply.

In addition to inhaling, I applied the blend topically over the heart, the combination of which provided immediate relief.

I had no idea at the time, but my reaction was based on science. Nobel-prize-winning researcher Linda Buck calls rose a “safety-signaling scent.” A smell that can override your fear response and suppress stress, even in the midst of what I now understand to be the intense pain of broken heart syndrome.

What is Broken Heart Syndrome?

My experience of intense physical heart pain following intense and unexpected grief is known as broken heart syndrome.

It turns out that an intense or sudden emotional experience that hurts your heart on an emotional level can also have a physical impact on your heart. 

Intense or sudden emotional or physical stress—like the loss of a child—shocks the heart and puts the body under severe stress, which can lead to chest pain and other symptoms that mimic a heart attack.

When you react to physical or emotional stress, your body releases a surge of stress hormones—such as adrenaline and cortisol—into your bloodstream to help you cope with the stress. These excess hormones can then “stun” or overstimulate the heart, triggering temporary changes in heart muscle cells or coronary blood vessels (or both) that prevent the left ventricle from contracting effectively.

More specifically, the heart muscle may be overwhelmed by the massive amount of adrenaline suddenly released in response to stress. It is speculated that excess adrenaline may cause narrowing of the small arteries that supply the heart with blood, resulting in a temporary disruption in the blood being pumped to the heart and a weakening of the left ventricle, the heart’s primary pumping chamber.

Alternatively, adrenaline may bind directly to the heart cells, causing large amounts of calcium to enter the cells. This large intake of calcium can prevent the heart cells from beating properly.

While the chest pain is real, the underlying cause is the body’s reaction to emotional stress, which has come to be known as stress-induced cardiomyopathy, or broken-heart syndrome.

What are the Symptoms of Broken Heart Syndrome?

You may experience broken heart syndrome symptoms within minutes to hours after a traumatic emotional event. Signs and symptoms of broken heart syndrome include:

  • Sudden, severe chest pain
  • Chest tightness or pressure
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Irregular heartbeats or heart palpitations
  • Dizziness or Fainting
  • Fatigue

What causes Broken Heart Syndrome?

Severe emotional or physical stress can cause broken heart syndrome, including:

  • Grief from the death of a loved one – family, friend, or pet
  • Any significant or unexpected loss – romantic breakup or divorce, job loss, financial loss
  • Sudden illness
  • Car or other accident
  • Traumatic events like natural disasters or earthquakes
  • Receiving bad news
  • Intense fear
  • Extreme anger
  • Severe pain
  • An exhausting physical event

Women are more prone to broken heart syndrome, especially those who experience anxiety. It is thought that, because estrogen helps protect the heart from adrenaline, reduced levels of estrogen during menopause may make the heart more susceptible to extreme emotional stress. 

Essential Oils for Heartbreak

Sadness and heartbreak are natural responses to the loss of something or someone to which you have formed a bond or an attachment, like the loss of my son.

Essential oils can help you process and shift feelings of heartbreak, along with the emotions of sadness, loss, grief, overwhelm, and disempowerment often associated with grief. Research on Broken Heart Syndrome found that essential oils like Lavender and Rose “proved very effective” for helping to heal Broken Heart Syndrome, noting that “lavender flowers relax the nerves and help calm and relax” the heart, calming broken heart syndrome.

The benefit of essential oils has to do, in part, with your sense of smell.

You have a direct link between your sense of smell and the areas of the brain responsible for moderating your emotions and behaviors. When you inhale essential oils, airborne substances stimulate receptor cells in the roof of the nasal cavities. The olfactory receptors carry signals to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The information is then sent to the limbic system of your brain, which is responsible for memory, behavior, emotion, and your mood.

On a physical level, only two synapses separate your limbic system from your olfactory nerve. No other sensory system has this kind of direct and intense contact with the neural substrates of your brain’s emotional control center. Your other four senses, including sound, sight, taste, and touch, must travel to different regions of the brain first, before reaching your limbic system.

This makes essential oils a potent tool for calming the intensity of some emotions that often accompany heartbreak, such as sadness, fear, and anger.

Your sense of smell can be used to calm your danger response. Nobel prize-winning researcher Linda Buck found that rose essential oil can counteract your brain’s response to predator odor and fear. Her research found that inhaling rose essential oil in the presence of other fear stimuli can suppress your brain’s stress responses and hormonal signals.

By triggering specific memories or emotions, the aroma from an essential oil may help release heartache, improve your mood, and promote relaxation. In fact, research suggests that essential oils may help in the treatment of depression, which is one of several emotions that people tend to experience when dealing with heartbreak.

Oils allow you to gently release these intense emotions, much like you would slowly and carefully unscrew the top of a carbonated beverage to release excess carbonation without causing an explosion.

My Favorite Essential Oils for Heartbreak

Certain plants can aid in the grieving or transition period. Essential oils are the concentrated essence of these plants that provide support in times of sudden loss, shock, or grief, as they can help ease your body’s fight-or-flight response and calm the all-systems alert that contributes to broken heart syndrome.

I have found the blends below to help comfort, strengthen, and regulate the heart, encouraging healthy heart function and gently releasing heartbreak and sadness.

Essential Oils to Purify the Air and Kill Mold

I am super sensitive to mold.

I often smell it in stores, buildings, and most concerning, hotel rooms.

Even the nicest hotels often have mold in their air ducts, especially those located near water sources. As I frequently travel with only carry-on luggage for work and prefer to stay in the hotel near the event, I have had to figure out a low-cost, portable solution to help mitigate mold on the go.

This past weekend at an event in Scottsdale, I shared my mold mitigation secret with mold-sensitive friends and colleagues who told me this solution “literally saved their life”.

Today, I am excited to share my favorite mold mitigation secret with you!

How Essential Oils Purify Air and Kill Mold

Essential oil vapors have been found to neutralize the respiratory impact of airborne mycotoxins from mold.

When I travel for business, I bring a small bottle of Histamine Balance oil, which I disperse into the air to help improve indoor air quality and combat mold spores.

It does not require expensive air purifiers or diffusers. Just a few drops of Histamine Balance oil in a small bowl of salt, which acts like a diffuser. 

I keep the salt on the nightstand, and it literally helps neutralize and purify the air.

Research supports this, noting that essential oils possess antifungal properties that help purify the air and mitigate the effects of airborne mold spores. According to research on the Ability of Essential Oil Vapors to Reduce Numbers of Culturable Aerosolized Coronavirus, Bacteria and Fungi, essential oil vapors reduced the number of viable spores by 72% AND they start reducing mold spores as quickly as 10 minutes!

Essential oils release volatile compounds into the air that have been shown to reduce the presence of airborne mold and bacteria. A 2021 study on the antimicrobial activity of volatile substances from essential oils found that airborne vapors from antimicrobial essential oils, such as rosemary, tea tree, and thyme, demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity, which may help purify the air and inhibit or kill certain types of mold. Essential oils can also help prevent, reduce, and halt the further spread of mold growth.

Many essential oils can also act as natural air fresheners, helping to mask unpleasant odors without introducing the synthetic chemicals found in many commercial air fresheners. I often carry oils with me to counteract the smell of commercial air fresheners in Ubers and other enclosed environments, such as office spaces, airplanes, and hotels. 

What’s more, essential oils with expectorant properties, such as Peppermint and Eucalyptus, may act as a natural decongestant, providing respiratory support and helping to maintain clear airways.

How Airborne Mold Spores Can Impact Your Health

Airborne mold spores are often inhaled through your nose and throat, impacting your sinuses, eyes, throat, lungs, and gut.

The toxic byproduct of mold, known as mycotoxins, are known neurotoxins that can damage your brain and your nervous system, contributing to symptoms like:

  • Brain fog
  • Fatigue and lethargy that don’t otherwise make sense 
  • Unexplained mood changes, anxiety, or depression
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Unsettled feeling, unquieted mind, overwhelm
  • Frequent or intense static shocks
  • Itchy or burning skin

Essential Oils to Purify the Air and Kill Mold

Mold starts in the nose, where the inhalation of tiny fungi, known as mycotoxins, through the nasal passages contributes to sinus inflammation and congestion.

The inhalation and intranasal application of antifungal essential oils can help ensure that mold also ends in the nose by helping to reset your nasal microbiome. 

Your olfactory system—the neural pathway for the sense of smell—directly communicates with your brain. This means that when you inhale toxins—like mold—they can travel directly into your brain through the olfactory neurons.

Similarly, natural remedies like essential oils—complex aromatic chemical products extracted from a diverse range of plants—also travel directly into the brain via the olfactory system, with antibacterial and antifungal constituents that help neutralize the impact of and offer relief from mold spores.

Essential oils serve as part of the plant’s immune system and contain therapeutic properties that protect plants from fungus, including mold, bacteria, and viruses. Essential oils are comprised of different chemical structures, including aldehydes, phenolics, and terpenes, some of which are believed to disrupt the fungal cell membranes of mold and destroy mold spores. Essential oils are believed to be effective against a diverse range of pathogens.

This is why blends of different essential oils are more effective for combating mold. Blends combine the antifungal, antibacterial, antiparasitic, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties of several individual oils, making them more effective than single oils used in isolation to combat mold.

The antimicrobial compounds in some essential oils are believed to disrupt the membranes and cell walls of mold spores, leading to the rupture and death of the mold cells. Research on Antifungal activity of essential oils against fungi isolated from air found “Essential oils have been demonstrated to have antifungal capabilities” that inhibit fungal growth. Clove oil was found to be most efficacious, performing better than traditional cleaning compounds such as vinegar.

How to use Essential Oils for Mold?

Essential oils can be used as intranasal treatments to clear nasal passages and relieve symptoms of sinus pressure and congestion. The best way to relieve sinus congestion and alleviate nasal mold exposure is through inhalation. 

You can inhale oils in several ways:

  • Inhaling directly from the bottle
  • Applying Intranasally with a Q-Tip
  • Diffusing into the room—I like to drop a few drops into a bowl of salt to naturally diffuse and disperse the essential oils into the air (which accesses the same olfactory neuronal pathway as mold) to clean the air and balance the body. 

The following blends can help neutralize mold.

Histamine Balance™

One of the reasons mold is such a potent toxin is its ability to cross directly into the brain through the olfactory system. Anything you inhale, including essential oils, can travel directly into your brain via your olfactory neurons. I suspect this is one of the reasons that some of us are so sensitive to smells like perfume, cigarette smoke, and gas fumes.

Conversely, inhaling, topically applying, or diffusing Histamine Balance™ seems to help modulate the immune response to mold quickly.

As you may know, Histamine is a chemical compound released by cells in response to injury, allergic, or inflammatory reactions, causing the contraction of smooth muscle and dilation of capillaries. While the release of histamine is a standard defense mechanism, an exaggerated histamine response can bind to cell receptor sites, causing irritation and chronic inflammation. This inflammatory response can cause sneezing, runny nose, watery, red, itchy eyes, rashes, breathing troubles such as wheezing, severe coughs, asthma, or hiccups.

Histamine levels are designed to be kept in balance by two enzymes that break down excess histamine and prevent allergic reactions. One of these enzymes resides in the lining of our intestines and is necessary to maintain balanced histamine levels in the gut. A damaged gut lining compromises the production and secretion of this enzyme, allowing histamine to accumulate and cause harm throughout the body.

The goal is to balance, not block, the histamine response as histamine performs critical functions in the body, contributing to HCL production and neurotransmitter signals. The essential oils in the Histamine Balance™ blend are uniquely suited to help modulate excess histamine excretion, balancing histamine levels and helping to reset the immune response and reduce allergic reactions. Blue Tansy, in particular, is known for neutralizing histamine and helping to control allergic reactions.

The research backs this up. In addition to Blue Tansy, which is known to modulate histamine responses, the blend contains Lavender, which is known for its antifungal properties. Lavender oil demonstrated inhibitory effects on mold growth and sporulation in several studies. The primary active components in lavender oil are linalool and linalyl acetate, which have demonstrated antibacterial and antiviral properties that may be beneficial for purifying the air.

The blend also contains Manuka oil, which is derived from the powerful antimicrobial and antifungal tea tree plant native to New Zealand. This oil is more potent and has stronger, broader-spectrum antimicrobial properties than conventional tea tree oil due to its higher concentration of triketones. Research on the effects of evaporating essential oils on indoor air quality found that evaporating tea tree oil in a room can temporarily decrease the concentration of airborne mold. The primary active compounds in tea tree oil are alpha-terpineol and terpinen-4-ol, which kill mold spores by disrupting the cell wall and causing cells to rupture and leak. Rosemary oil is also known for its antifungal properties, making it an excellent choice for halting mold growth. Similarly, Peppermint and Ravensara are beneficial in preventing the effects of some mycotoxins.

For intranasal application, coat two cotton swabs in Histamine Balance™ blend, and either swab or gently insert the cotton swabs into your nose. You can also apply 1-2 drops topically to the bottom of the feet. For allergic reactions, smell or apply 1-2 drops behind your ears, on the back of your neck, or on your sternum to open airways. For the gut and food intolerance support, apply in a clockwise direction around the belly button. For brain congestion, apply 1-2 drops at the base of the skull on the back of the head. For Aromatic Usage, hold the bottle under your nose for 3 or 4 breaths.

Parasympathetic®

Mold exposure can induce a state of chronic stress that overstimulates the sympathetic “fight-or-flight” nervous system, resulting in a suppressed parasympathetic “rest-and-digest” response. Parasympathetic® can help activate and strengthen the parasympathetic system, supporting the body’s ability to heal and recover.

This blend contains clove and lime, which significant research supports using to help eradicate or prevent surface-level mold. Clove oil is known for its antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal, insecticidal, and antioxidant properties and has been found to inhibit the growth of molds, yeasts, and bacteria. In fact, clove oil was observed to be the essential oil with the greatest broad-spectrum inhibitory effect to suppress mold growth. Evidence suggests that clove oil can kill mold and fungal spores almost as effectively as commercial disinfectants.

These antimicrobial properties may be attributed to high levels of eugenol, a principal constituent of clove oil. Eugenol possesses a chemical structure known as a hydroxyphenyl propene, which enables it to alter and damage the permeability of a fungus’s cell membrane, causing its cell contents to leak out and ultimately destroying the fungus itself. This is the reason that eugenol is associated with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities. It protects your cells against fungi and bacteria.

One study found clove oil to be powerful against Aspergillus, the most dangerous form of black mold.

Citrus oils, such as lime, are also known to be antifungal, as they are able to break down mold spores at a molecular level. Parasympathetic blends a combination of clove and lime and may help eradicate surface mold and prevent mold from forming on surfaces like shower grout and bathtub caulking.

To stimulate the parasympathetic response, apply Vibrant Blue Parasympathetic blend to the vagal nerve (behind the earlobe on the mastoid bone) throughout the day and before meals.

Sinus Support™

Mold is often a root cause of chronic sinus issues. When mold enters the sinus cavity, a suppressed immune system is likely to have a strong adverse reaction, resulting in fungal sinusitis. Since fungi thrive in damp, dark conditions, the sinus cavity provides an ideal environment for growth, making it challenging to eliminate them once they are established.

Your sinuses are a connected system of hollow cavities in the skull that drain into your nose. Typically, the sinuses are empty except for a thin layer of mucus. When your sinuses are inflamed due to mold exposure, thick mucus fills the nasal cavity, causing your tissue to swell and blocking the drainage openings into your nose, so fluid can no longer escape. It’s your body’s first response to injury, infection, or stress—sending immune cells, blood flow, and repair molecules to the site of damage. But when inflammation lingers too long or becomes chronic, it can stall healing, cause pain, and lead to further tissue damage.

An additional study conducted by the Journal of Planta Medica discovered that a chemical compound present in clove essential oil was successful at recovering nerve functions of rats with diabetic neuropathy.

Parasympathetic® oil can also be used to reduce the body’s inflammatory response. Similarly, the warming characteristic of clove oil is thought to provide numbing relief from pain, and the antioxidants found in this oil assist in the protection of body cells.

6. Nerve Repair™

Basil oil was also found to produce painkilling effects on mice with chronic muscle pain, leading researchers to suggest basil oil as a potential method of pain relief for those with fibromyalgia.

How Histamine Contributes to PMS Pain

That time of the month was always a nightmare for me—intense cramping and pain to the point that I would occasionally take the day off from work.

Until I started changing my diet, supporting my adrenal glands, and reducing my histamine sensitivity.

Many people don’t realize that histamine—a chemical messenger involved in your body’s inflammatory and immune responses—may play a role in premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Your body releases histamine before and during your period to aid with uterine contractions. The higher histamine levels to support uterine muscle contractions can lead to period cramps and other PMS symptoms.

Increased sensitivity to histamine, and its involvement in inflammation and smooth muscle contraction, can contribute to menstrual cramps and pain. Hormonal fluctuations, especially during the menstrual cycle, can influence histamine release from mast cells, potentially exacerbating pain and other symptoms. 

Hormones like estrogen increase the amount of histamine released by mast cells in the uterus. Mast cells have receptors for estrogen. When estrogen binds to these receptors, more histamine is released from mast cells in your uterus. The more estrogen you have in your body, the more histamine is released. It follows that higher numbers of mast cells and more mast cell activity at menstruation could be a trigger for more period pain. 

Mast cells also produce and release prostaglandins, which may influence uterine muscle contractions during menstruation, triggering inflammation and pain. Higher levels of prostaglandins trigger stronger contractions, resulting in increased pain.

Histamine is also a stimulating neurotransmitter that can cause anxiety and insomnia. 

Histamine is a chemical compound released by mast cells, basophils, and specific neurons in response to injury, allergic or inflammatory reactions, causing contraction of smooth muscle and dilation of capillaries. 

When your body senses a trigger, mast cells release histamines. Once released, histamines promote inflammation, including increased blood flow to the area. Mast cells have been found in various parts of the uterine tissue, including the myometrium (the muscular wall) and the endometrium (the lining of the uterus).

While the release of histamine is a standard defense mechanism, an exaggerated histamine response can bind to cell receptor sites, causing irritation and chronic inflammation. When it’s released, it can cause blood vessels to dilate, leading to redness and swelling, and it can also stimulate nerve endings, contributing to pain. 

Histamine levels are designed to be kept in balance by two enzymes—diamine oxidase (DAO) and histamine N-methyltransferase—that break down excess histamine so you don’t end up with too much in your body. If histamine isn’t properly broken down, the excess builds up and causes symptoms, including period cramps.

The changes in histamine levels during the menstrual cycle can affect several different functions, including:

  • Breast tenderness: Elevated histamine levels can cause breast tissue to become more sensitive, leading to pain and tenderness.
  • Mood swings: Histamine can affect neurotransmitters in the brain, potentially contributing to mood swings, anxiety, and irritability during the menstrual cycle.
  • Headaches: Histamine can trigger headaches or migraines before your cycle.
  • Bloating: Histamine can affect gut motility and contribute to gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, and changes in bowel movements.
  • Cramping: Histamine can cause blood vessels to dilate, resulting in increased blood flow to the uterus. This can cause pain and cramping during menstruation.
  • Poor Sleep: Histamine can interfere with sleep by stimulating the central nervous system. This can lead to difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep during the night.
  • Stomach Discomfort: Histamine can stimulate the production of stomach acid, leading to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Higher levels of inflammation: Period pain may result from higher levels of histamine, which can exacerbate cramps, bloating, and fatigue.
  • Heavy Bleeding: Excessive uterine bleeding is associated with histamine release due to the simultaneous release of heparin and heparin-like anti-coagulants. Heparin is a blood thinner that prevents blood clotting. Higher levels, due to increased mast cell activity, could cause heavier bleeding.

Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can affect histamine levels. 

Histamine interacts with hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, which can influence its levels and effects in the body, especially during your menstrual cycle. 

Estrogen is an immune system stimulator. It triggers the release of histamine from the mast cells in the ovaries and uterus. Progesterone works to counteract the effects of estrogen, helping to regulate the release of histamine and support your body’s natural breakdown of histamine. In the premenstrual phase, when estrogen levels may be high and progesterone is declining and less available to slow down excess histamine, histamine release can be increased, potentially leading to more pain. 

Estrogen and histamine influence each other, with estrogen triggering the release of histamine from mast cells, and histamine stimulating further estrogen production, creating a cycle. The more unopposed estrogen we have roaming around our bodies, the more histamines are produced. And unfortunately, the more histamines we have, the more estrogen is produced by the ovaries. What’s more, estrogen can hinder the enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO), which is responsible for breaking down histamine, potentially leading to higher histamine levels and more pronounced symptoms. 

The interaction between estrogen and histamine goes both ways:

Histamine has an additive effect on estrogen, which can raise estrogen levels (think heavy periods, endometriosis, migraines).

When your estrogen levels are high, mast cells are stimulated to release more histamine.

In other words, more estrogen means you release more histamine than you can break down, and since histamine turns up estrogen production, it can quickly become a vicious cycle. Estrogen is often at its highest point right before ovulation, so symptoms are often worse here. 

According to a study published in the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, mast cell activation and a surplus of histamine release may cause excessive uterine bleeding and heavy periods. They may increase period pain and cramps before and during menstruation.

Research on Histamine receptors in the female reproductive system found that histamine receptors play a critical role in the menstrual cycle. A chemical called prostaglandin causes your uterus to contract and expel the uterine lining. Higher levels of prostaglandin and these contractions cause pain and cramping.

Many essential oils can help alleviate inflammation and act as natural antihistamines to stabilize mast cells and relieve symptoms associated with heightened histamine levels, including those found in the Histamine Balance™ blend.

Blue Tansy is known for neutralizing histamine and helping to control allergic reactions. Research on “Chemical Characterization and Antifungal Activity of Blue Tansy Essential Oil” found that Blue Tansy, which has a deep blue hue due to the chemical constituent chamazulene, a powerful sesquiterpene, is used in traditional medicine as an anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine.
